'fools for gold' ss24
'Fools For Gold' is my graduation collection which focuses on the wealth inequality of modern society which draws parallels from the current royal family and the 18th century French court of King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. I'm raising £1000 to finance this fashion collection which will result in 5 looks designed and handmade by myself. This project explores the structures that support the wealth gap and the importance of community through up-cycling old curtain materials and producing garments using crafting techniques. A huge passion of mine is learning traditional crafts and I hope to include techniques such as macrame, crochet, and embroidery within my garments as homage to community based craft cultures. This subject is close to my heart, 2023 saw tax payer money used to fund a £100 million coronation while the cost of living worsened and the reliance on food bank increased. Discussing these issues through fashion raises awareness and puts pressure on improving our society.

about me
I'm Madison Irons, born in Hertfordshire and moved to Kingston for university. I started at Kingston University in 2020; my first year was disrupted by lockdown procedures, and I spent all of the second term online. Since regulations eased, Knights Park has become my second home with all the time I spend in the studios and library. I am strongly interested in fashion and politics. These subjects are intertwined, art has always been political and fashion is my choice of medium to examine societal issues. My plans after graduating are work in the fashion industry, pushing the need to prioritise environmental impacts in production and focusing on slow cyclical fashion and the importance of hand-crafted garments.
Studying fashion has always been a dream of mine, and after the struggles of lockdown and quarantine, university has been a difficult but empowering challenge. The course expectations are high and the workload higher. I work as a student ambassador however most of my time is spent sewing and as such, financing final year is difficult. Therefore any support or financial donations will be vital in ensuring my collection reaches its potential. Donors will allow me to buy sewing supplies and environmentally friendly fabrics as my student budget doesn't account for the higher costs of buying ethically.
Where will the funds go?
Fashion is an expensive degree, from toiling, fabrics, trims, styling and costs of photoshoots. It is important I source ethical fabrics and pay my models/photographers fair wages.
Fabric/trims for 4 looks: £600
Photographer/Models: £400
Any extra funds will be used for improving my editorial photoshoot through location/styling/props.

Sketching and designing is a huge process within building a collection and so for anyone who donates, I would love to send you a signed print of my designs. After submission, there is a Kingston Fashion BA Show; if anyone is interested, I would be more than happy to send a link to see the recorded show and my looks on the catwalk!
