Chimera - 300N Hybrid engine with Shape Memory Alloy Nozzle and Custom Fuel Grain

Project Chimera (V2) next phase Funding, raising £1000.

This is a Second opportunity to fund us further. Our goal is to develop a 300N hybrid  engine using a Shape Memory Alloy Nozzle (made of Nitinol sheets) and custom 3D-printed fuel grain (Made of ABS and PETG), the effects of this grain will be tracked via an ECT (Electrical Capacitance Tomography).

Your support will help us take this innovation from concept to reality.

Who are we?

We are a team of Aerospace Students specialising in propulsion systems and advanced materials with a unique collective of experiences coming together to make this project possible. we’ve embarked on Project Chimera—a venture that merges innovative technologies and creative engineering. We’re determined to push the boundaries of what’s possible in space vehicle technology.

Our Story

As part of our degree we chose to create a hybrid engine, this is where the ideas of Shape Memory Alloys and Electrical Capacitance Tomography (ECT) combine. This ability to change shape inspired the mythical name Chimera  - a creature known for its shape shifting, versatility and power - we’ve designed a hybrid engine that symbolises adaptability and innovation.

What are we doing and why?

We’re developing a 300N engine that integrates Shape Memory Alloy, a material never before used in such a capacity, paired with custom 3D-printed fuel. The heat produced at nozzle will affect the Shape Memory Alloy which in turn will increase the expansion ratio for altitude optimisation.

Where will the money go?

We’re raising £1000, which will be allocated to essential project components.

This is what your money will go to:

Aluminium Flat Bars  (for bulkheads) - £170

Nitinol Sheets (SMA Nozzle) - £250

Aluminium Round Bar (for injector) - £15

Mild steel flat bar (for nozzle plates) - £24

Phenolic liner (for fuel grain protection) - £90

Phenolic Sheets (for nozzle protection) - £120

High Temperature cement (moulds + back up nozzle) - £34

3D Filament (ABS and PETG) - £110

Stainless steel wire mesh ( for back-up nozzle support) - £17

Piping and fittings (for nozzle cooling) - £20

External costs ( Postage + Customs) - £50

Reserve  Budget -  £100

Rewards

YOUR NAME ETCHED ON THE ROCKET ENGINE. While we can’t offer material rewards due to this being a group project, as a token of our appreciation, we’ll engrave your name on the rocket engine. Every contributor will also receive regular updates on our progress, ensuring you’re part of this journey.
