Set against the backdrop of London’s canals in the depths of winter, this documentary follows three women living solo on narrowboats, each seeking freedom from the constraints of conventional life. Through their personal journeys, the film explores themes of solitude, self-discovery, and the desire to escape societal expectations.
My story
Two years ago, I was in a housing crisis. After being rejected from every place I put an offer in for I found myself sharing a room in a dingy run down council flat. and all I could think was, 'This can’t be it?' I was stuck. And, not for the first time. Throughout my twenties, I bounced from place to place, never staying long enough to truly call anywhere "a home." As I neared 30, I lounged for some sense of stability. I felt lost. Then one day, I stumbled across an article about two students who had ditched renting to live on a boat in central London. And it sparked the question.. “Could I do this too, and can I do it on my own?”. Well as it turns out I can and a lot of other women do too..

This film, The Women of the Water, is my way of capturing the powerful untold stories of the amazing solo boatwomen of the canals. It’s about resilience, community, and the beauty of choosing a unique path. With your support, we can bring these voices to life and share this journey with the world. Where will the money go?
Every penny raised will directly contribute to bringing The Women of the Water to life. Here’s how your support will make a difference:
Transport (£200): We’ll be traveling across London to film in some of the most beautiful and remote canal locations. Your support helps cover train fares and travel for the crew to bring these stories to the screen.
Food (£200): Long shoot days require plenty of energy! Your donations will ensure the team stays fueled and focused during filming, plus contribute to a celebratory dinner to thank everyone for their hard work.
LED Lighting (£90): To create visually stunning footage, we’ll be using portable LED lights to capture every moment, no matter the time of day or location.
New GH5 Battery (£50): Reliable equipment is essential for a smooth shoot. This battery ensures our camera keeps rolling without interruptions.
ND Filters (£80): These filters are crucial for filming outdoors in varying light conditions, helping us achieve professional, cinematic quality.
Film Festival Submissions (£200): We’re determined to share these incredible stories with a wider audience. Your support will help us submit the film to key festivals, giving these women’s voices the platform they deserve.
Contributions to Crew (£125): While our talented team is volunteering their time, your contributions will help cover essential costs and show appreciation for their dedication.
