A trip down memory lane in the Camera Kingdom

A short summary of your project

The Next Camera is a dissertation project (now known as an Independent Research Project) that aims to capture the history of the design of cameras, with a strong focus on the evolution of film cameras to the digital cameras we all use today. I would like to be able to experience using a second hand film camera that is different to the camera I own. It would be very interesting to see the difference in photos that it captures and simply how the camera is operated. With your support and generous donations, I will be able to find and purchase a second-hand film camera that I can use to go out and shoot.

Who are you?

Hello :) My name is Lily Tham and I am final year Product and Furniture Design student (sometimes wish I studied Photography...but both still definitely link together in a way). I have a huge love for Photography and my friends know me as the photographer of the group.

Your story

It's safe to say that it's up there with the top 5 things that I love the most. I recently had a lightbulb moment when thinking about what my dissertation was going to be about. I wanted it to be something that I was extremely passionate about and that I could really research into...and that led me to wanting to become a camera expert. Through this project, I hope to understand the evolution and genealogy of cameras and the processes that people had to go through just to take a picture. We are all so aware that taking pictures today is so easy. With one button on our phones, we are able to capture those special moments and instantly look at them, edit them and post them for the world to see. We are even able to take multiple pictures of the same moment, and technology can merge these pictures together to capture the moments when everyone is smiling or looking the right way. I think that means we lose a lot of meaning in each photo we take as the photos on our phones are, in a way, limitless in number.

Without going down a photography rabbit hole, in such a digital world, I would like to take a step back in time to appreciate, experience and enjoy the ways in which Photography was carried out. I am extremely excited to use a second-hand film camera and, in a way, see through the eyes of the previous owner. How did they use it? What did they see? What did they capture? I would like to capture natural moments of people, nature and any moments that I see fit. I am looking forward to showcasing these to you all.

One thing that never fails is word of mouth...I would love if you could share this project with anyone you know via Instagram, Email, LinkedIn, Whatsapp or during a chat with your neighbour over the fence, and this only takes 5 seconds. The more people who know about it, the more likely we can make this project a reality. THANK YOU!
