A short summary of your project
I'm raising money to produce and expand my final year project: the Queer Typo Archive.
Who are you?
I'm Harvey, a final year graphic design student here at Kingston. Over the last four years, I have refined my practice to an investigation of themes of language and communication; the queer experience and structures of dissemination through a process-driven practice of (experimental) type design, (radical) publishing and (informed) rule-breaking.
Your story
I am creating a publication that acts as a source of information and also a platform for artists and designers to share their work, voices and ideas. When is a font queer? Who is designing these fonts? How can queer archives become a way to encourage engaging with histories whilst also enabling experimental type design?
This project is incredibly important to me, as a gay man, as it is a collection of all my key interests and cares — I have also already built the beginnings of an empowering community around it, which I am incredibly excited to expand.
By donating to this project, you will be enabling the printing of many more publications for people to read, and facilitate workshops which will in-turn create content for future publications.
Where will the money go?
I was able to hand-print and bind 28 copies of this publication for my degree. This production was incredibly limited by a combination of lack of funding and also how exhausting hand-making them was. With a larger budget, I would be able to print many more editions of the content, whilst keeping them accessible for people to acquire (I have had lots of people expressing their interest already!). Furthermore, the development of this project is partly due to being with workshops, where groups will work together to create letterforms inspired by archival material of queer history. For these to happen, we will need a budget for space hire and also equipment.
Here is a breakdown of how much these things would cost:
— Paper (£500)
— Printing/Binding (£1000)
— Estimate of space hire (£250)
— Equipment hire for workshops (£100)
Any extra money would be used in the production of the next publication. As this project is going to constantly grow and evolve, there will always be a use for budget!
Rewards
Of course anybody who donates will receive a publication free of charge, and also a selection of printed posters of the fonts I've created as part of this project!
