MY PROJECT
'Now the Author of the Glazed Water' is a series of 3 publications telling the story of Dove Type. Over one hundred years ago, a dispute began in a printing press in Hammersmith, London. Through disposing led letterpress into the Thames, T.J Cobden Sanderson said goodbye to his printing partner Emery Walker, and his printing legacy of Doves Type. This type has been appreciated by an array of mudlarkers, finding ways to tell the story years on. Inspired by the dramatic event, I've been fascinated by the theme of ownership of the written word in design. I've been working with poetic mudlarkers to create a narrative, gathering their words as they have gathered the type. Through conversations, this is a collaboration of storytelling. The second issue contains the writings of 9 different mudlarkers, poets and writers, both archived and created specifically for this project.
WHO am i
My name is Lola, I'm a Graphic Designer from South East London, with work exploring the intersection of design and storytelling. Emphasising the value of writing as a tool - like a paintbrush or pencil - much of my work focuses on the visual relationship between words and their spaces. I am about to graduate with a BA in Graphic Design from Kingston School of art, where I have been studying since foundation in 2020.
My story
Growing up in the busyness of London has meant that I am a 'people centred' designer. My research interests are formed around people and stories. Through the act of collecting writings and words, I am able to harness the experiences of a range of voices. Over the last 5 years, I've come to realise how essential it is to engage in ongoing conversations - not just with other creative disciplines, but also with people who ignite new curiosities in me. Moving to Amsterdam in 2023 allowed me to dive deep into the world of traditional printmaking. With an internship at a letterpress Werkplaats, my skillset as a technician, designer and printer grew rapidly. Much of my publishing practice creates a space for new and exciting voices in and around the history of print. This launch aligns with the beginning of my self-publishing practice: RPL/Ripple Writings.
Where will the money go?
With the money I raise from KUBacker I wish to create more copies of my 'issue 2' publication. I have already created multiple copies of the book, printing and binding by hand which takes up time and effort. With financial backing, I will be able to send off the book to be externally printed and bound which means there will be more opportunities for this book to go further afield. At the moment, the book is a paperback cover, but with this support, I will be able to hand bind hardback covers to make the books even more authentic to the original story. I am hosting a book launch at the end of May, and with more financial support, I will be able to cover the costs to ensure it is the special evening I'm planning it to be. The venue where I will launch the book is The Emery Walker House, a Grade II listed terraced house, home to a unique arts and crafts collection. Because of this, the money I raise will help cover the cost to preserve the space as well as to hold the solo show here.
A brief breakdown of the costs:
- Venue hire (one night): £200
- Book launch (providing drinks, advertisement) £100
- Printing and production £1000
Rewards
- A copy of the book will be given to those who donate over £20
