Who are you?
We are Unit 5, a studio consisting of both 4th and 5th year Architecture students at Kingston University. We all share an enthusiasm for community-led design and sustainability, and hope that through this workshop we will be able to learn more about how to truly incorporate those values into our university work and future professional work.
Unit 5 is taught by Takeshi Hayastu, of Hayatsu Architects, Salah Krichen and Francesca Merton, both of the 121.Collective. We are supported by The Community Brain, a local community interest company, who work to cultivate the community and its people.
A short summary of your project
We want to create a workshop for the ‘First in Tolworth’ market on the 6th March for the local community to get involved in. Our aim is to collaborate with the local community to design and make clay tiles by exploring different craft processes involved in making and printing, such as stamping, carving and hammering. This workshop will allow us to engage with and empower the community through making - bringing the people of Tolworth to the center of our project.
Your story
Throughout its history at Kingston, Unit 5’s core values has always centered around community engagement and community-led design projects. We want to continue this ethos by engaging the people of Tolworth and utilizing their talents and creative skills to create unique tiles of their own design. We hope our workshop will strengthen the relationship between all those involved
