Fundraising for our publication and degree show

Introduction

MASS INERTIA - Fine Art degree show 2024!! With the end of our many years on the course, we want to create a show to remember!

Who are we?

We are a small group of 13 people within the third year of Fine Art BA, wanting to showcase the talent of our final year. Fundraising is an important part of the journey through our final months, to optimise the springboard that the degree show functions as. We will use this to aid us in creating a publication, all the different aspects of putting together a final show, and to sponsor additional talent in the form of a graphic designer, in a large-scale project with fellow creatives.

Our story

We are a committee of ambitious students looking to maximise the impact of our degree show. We aim to achieve this through the production of a publication to accompany the exhibition, a varied program of live events that will run throughout the week of the show and, the creation of a rollover fund for the degree show of the class of 2025. We as a group of 13 students have engaged in weekly meetings to organise the logistics, branding, extracurricular activities and fundraising for the Degree show. Our cause needs to state that the committee has functioned solely as a student-led organisation formed from members of the FA and FAAH courses, who want the additional responsibility and experience that comes with organising such an important event.

Where will the money go?

  • Publication printing and distribution* - £1,500
  • Events held at the show** - £400
  • Payment for external speakers and visiting artists/ curators etc. - £300
  • Graphic designer fee - £250
  • Roll over fund*** - £250
  • Branding and poster design - £100
  • Emergency fund for (unpredictable expenses) - £200

*Publication

Our intention for the publication is for it to function as a memento (similar to a yearbook) and an artist monograph. Providing a level of nostalgia combined with professionalism. Every course member, should they wish to be, will be included. A photograph of their studio space alongside a picture of them or a small statement will constitute their page within the book. This fulfils the memento aspect of the publication. We have budgeted to allow for £300 to go to an external practitioner(s) to be invited to the show, to write something about the show. With this, we aim to bring a level of professionalism to this publication. For example, were a review of the show to be written we would add the printed review into every copy. We want every student to have a copy free of charge, 70 copies. Additionally, the print run will account for 70 copies to be purchasable from the degree show shop and another 70 to be sent out to various galleries.

**Degree Show

The Private View of the Mass Inertia is on Saturday 8th June. The show then remains open from the 10th to the 16th. Over this week we have arranged to have additional events to happy within and around the gallery space. Such as a poetry reading, organised by a few students from the Third Year. However, we have not only let final year students put on an event. This is the first year that it has been open to first and second years to contribute to the final year show. We think this is a very important change for the betterment of the feel of the course. With more people able to add to the growing program of events we have allowed for a sum of £400 to provide food, technical equipment and support, for these events that will increase the footfall of the show. Raising the profile of the show and giving more opportunities to network and gain exposure through our graduation.

***Roll Over Fund

Improving the atmosphere of the course is something we as a committee are keen to address. Opening up a space for events between 10th and 16th June for events held by those in first and second year in addition to this, we are very proud to say that we will be passing over a fund of £250 to the current second year. This starts a tradition of a yearly rollover Degree Show fund from the final year to the one below.

Rewards

Donors will receive a copy of the publication as well as a free item in the shop. Additionally, they are more than welcome to attend the PV of Mass Inertia. They should know from the outline above how much of a difference this fund will make. Funding will; benefit two things. The university and its showcase of its final-year students, that will be given the best possible chance of creative work and connections. One of the factors universities are assessed on is what percentage of graduates are within the employment of their chosen area of study within 12 months. Secondly US the students who have learned so much through this process and will continue to do so. As we progress into the working world or further study.

Social Media / Shop

The branding and promotion for the show is something that cannot be overlooked. TikTok, Instagram, physical posters and a mailing list are the ways that we will drum up anticipation for the opening. The gift shop provides an opportunity for students to sell small items such as key chains and prints to those visiting the show. Furthering how the show gives exposure. The publications accompanying inserts (reviews and statements) will be sold there too. The effect of the shop is to counteract the stuffiness and overly formal atmosphere that can follow arts based events. Having a gift shop is a tasteful way to prevent this.

Help us succeed!

  • If you can, please donate to our project!! This isn't just a chance for us to showcase our talent, but it is also a chance to get a leg up into the ever-growing world of artists!
  • If you can't donate, that is okay, please share this project instead! The more people we can get to hear us, the more help we can get!
  • We would also be appreciative of any help given, whether this be in the form of website design, ideas for fundraising, etc. it could be anything!
  • We appreciate you, for any help given.
