The Student Activities Hardship Fund ensures that every Kingston University student can take part in societies and sports club activities, no matter their financial situation. The fund will provide financial support for membership fees, equipment, and essential activities, helping make student life more accessible and inclusive for everyone.
Who WE ARE...
We are the Kingston Students' Union, committed to breaking down barriers and creating opportunities for every student to thrive at University and beyond. Our societies and sports clubs are at the heart of campus life. They foster friendships, build confidence, develop skills, improve wellbeing and create a true sense of belonging. This fund reflects our commitment to ensuring no one misses out on those experiences because of financial hardship.
WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT...
University should be a place where every student can discover their passions and be part of a community - something many Kingston alumni will remember well. They shape confidence, belonging, and identity, helping students feel truly part of Kingston. These experiences don’t just enrich student life; they build skills, friendships, and memories that last well beyond graduation.
Research shows that when students feel part of their University, they’re more likely to stay, succeed, and achieve better outcomes. But rising living costs mean too many students are forced to choose between joining a society or a sports club and covering essentials like food for the week. Membership fees, kit, travel costs and equipment can quickly add up, leaving many excluded from opportunities that could transform their time at Kingston.
Our research shows that 28.2% of Kingston University students had considered dropping out due to financial pressures. 76.9% reported their social activity had been majorly or moderately impacted by the rising cost of living. 47.5% felt their income was not sufficient to cover their living costs. 23.5% students can't afford membership fees to join a sports club or society.
By donating, you are ensuring that no student is excluded due to costs. You are helping today's students experience the same joy, pride and opportunity that shaped your time at Kingston. Together we can remove barriers and make sure every student, regardless of background has the chance to play, perform, lead, and belong.
Where will the money go?
Every donation will go directly towards supporting students through a transparent and fair application process. The fund will support:- Membership fees (up to 100%) – removing cost barriers to join clubs and societies
- Equipment and kit (up to 75%) – ensuring students can take part safely and confidently
- Social and activity costs (up to 50%) – helping students stay connected
Every penny will be used to ease financial barriers, allowing students to focus on what truly matters: enjoying their University experience, building community, and growing through shared experiences.
