When reality breaks, imagination becomes a refuge.

A short summary of our project

The loss of a child is widely recognised as a profound tragedy. Yet the loss of a pregnancy, though equally devastating, is often misunderstood or minimized. Footprints is a short film that seeks to acknowledge this grief and affirm the experiences of those who have lived it.  In our film our main character Emma retreats into her perfect fantasy of motherhood following the loss of a baby but as reality begins to fracture her imagined world, the devastating truth of her grief is revealed. This is an incredibly sensitive subject that will be explored through an experimental cinematic language, combining striking visuals with carefully crafted sound design to convey the emotional experience.

our story

My name is Cal, and I am the writer of this short film.  I have seen how deeply this kind of loss can affect people through the experience of someone close to me, and that is why I wanted to be involved in this project.

The development of the idea has been a collaboration between our strong female director who is herself a mother of 4 and our award winning DOP.  I have successfully worked with most of my crew before and know that they will do this important story justice.

We are all Kingston University students and most of us are graduating this year so we are hoping to make one last impactful film while we still have the support of the university lecturers and loans room staff.  Filmmaking is a tough industry to break into and the more that we can have on our showreel and the more experience we have the better, so we are really grateful for support from this fantastic crowdfunding platform and the Kingston Alumni.

Where will the money go?

The majority of our budget will be split between paying actors, providing good quality meals for cast and crew and reimbursing travel expenses.  We will have a small budget for set design items that are essential for the story.  We are incredibly fortunate that the family of a crew member have offered their house for us to film in and Kingston University will also kindly provide the backdrop for the final scene and so we do not have location hire costs.

As this is a sub-5-minute film with a small cast we are able to keep it to a 3 day shoot so that really helps keep cost down

Budget:

Actors  £600

Travel  £150

Food £240

Set design £120

Misc £40 (printing, gaffer tape, batteries, bin bags for blacking out etc..)
