Support emerging artists bring their dance film to life

project SUMMARY

This film is born out of a need to respond to the quiet pressures of conformity that shape how we live, move, and exist in contemporary first-world society.

Through dance, it explores the tension between individuality and the social norms, cultural expectations, and institutional structures that regulate how identity is expressed and perceived by others.

At its core, the film asks what happens when someone steps outside what is labelled as 'normal' or 'acceptable'. It investigates the unspoken rules that dictate behaviour, and the moment those invisible lines are crossed.

Guided by the idea that there is no right or wrong until someone crosses the line, the work exposes how those who challenge normativity are often met with judgment, discrimination, exclusion, or punishment. Movement becomes resistance, revealing the cost of difference, and the courage it takes to claim individuality in a world that demands sameness.

Who is behind this project?

This dance film is created by students from Kingston University, Kingston School of Art, in collaboration across BA Dance and BA Filmmaking. The project is led by one director/choreographer, working with an ensemble of six dancers and one filmmaker, bringing together movement and cinematic vision to create a unique interdisciplinary work.
