A short summary of your project

We are a group of 12 Kingston University Filmmaking students making our final year graduation film.

"Precious Things" is at its core a  story about survival and independence: a mother pushed to her limits, determined to protect her autistic son and keep them both free from the shadow of her controlling ex-husband.

Kate has taken the brave step to extricate herself from her toxic marriage but the pressure of looking after her autistic son and supporting herself is taking its toll.  Kate's ex Mark hates that she has escaped his control and is using manipulation and guilt to try and get her back. She has achieved her freedom, but will she be able to keep it?

We feel that this is an important story to tell as women living under coercive control are frequently silenced, isolated and overlooked.  This short film seeks to illuminate their reality - exposing the insidious nature of the abuse, the very real struggle they face while honouring the strength it takes to break free.

We are a group of final year filmmaking students who have successfully worked together on previous projects and enjoy working together as we share a similar work ethic, attention to detail and desire to tell important stories authentically and sensitively.

Where will the money go?

The entire crew are final year filmmaking students and we have access to equipment for free through the university so the bulk of the money we need to raise will go towards paying actors as we believe that professionals should not have to work for free.

We have been lucky enough to be given the location that we are filming in for free by people who believe in the talent of our crew so the rest of the money we are fundraising for will go on paying for travel and food for cast and crew, set design, equipment and some contingency for unforeseen circumstances.  We have high expectations for the result of this film and so we will also be applying to film festivals so have allocated some budget for this as well.
