A celebratory anniversary issue of the National Covid Memorial Wall

A summary

In collaboration with the National Covid Memorial Wall, I aim to raise as much as possible to fund the printing and distribution of the newspaper I have produced as possible. The newspaper in question includes my dissertation - How impactful is The National Covid Memorial Wall as a symbol of commemoration and political resistance? It consists of an interview / reflective piece written by Fran Hall, the head of 'The UK Wall of Grief and Love' group who oversees the care and upkeep of the wall, and who are fighting tirelessly to have it be granted permanent status. My aim for the newspaper is for it to act as a commemorative issue to celebrate and educate others on why the wall serves as such an important monument of grief grass roots political resistance, which has indefinitely changed the landscape of memorial culture. It is important for people to understand the full scope of the National Covid Memorial in the context of contemporary memorial culture, and to recognise the continued hard work of those who conceived and continue to maintain the wall.

Who Am I?

My name is Bethany Kellaghan McGurk, I am a Graphic Design student at Kingston School of Art. I am collaborating with The UK Wall of Grief and Love to make this project a reality.

THE STORY BEHIND THE PROJECT

I decided to write this dissertation subsequently turn it into a publication because more people need to be made aware of the National Covid Memorial Walls's existence or the complete understanding of the significance of its creation. This is important as the wall has not yet been granted permanent status and remains at risk of erasure, it must be preserved for future generations to remember the scale of collective loss that we have as a society endured from the coronavirus. The wall also places ownership of memory in the hands of the bereaved, to remember and learn from the horrors we have endured and the responsibility our governing body must face to never let it be repeated. Your donations will encourage others to champion and push forward the permanence of the wall because our collective voices lead to change.

Where will the money go?

The money will go towards printing the newspapers from a site called Newspaper Club. Once printed, the newspapers will be available at the wall and used for the promotion by the National Covid Memorial Wall when reaching out to funding bodies.

The following numbers reflect the prices and numbers of newspapers possible to print:

100x copies = £247

200x copies = £427

300x copies = £587

400x copies = £720

500x copies = £844

£60 - for a newspaper stand to distribute the papers I will aim to update donors regularly with the final print of the newspaper, as well as its eventual distribution.

Remaining funding for additional copies.
